Salt inhalers can have a powerful healing affect on the lungs and body in general.
It was found that people were visiting salt caves and finding great relief from lung related issues like asthma. It appears that some clever individual(s) reasoned that the salt cave affect could be brought to the masses via salt inhalers. You can buy them ready made or make your own, like I did. I have read that, in America, you can apparently visit self built salt caves to relax and detox just like you might with a sauna. Supposedly, these salt saunas are very good for the skin. This is interesting in itself because, according to Chinese Medicine, the state of health of the lungs and colon reflect in the skin.
I first made one with bits and bobs out the kitchen after dealing with pleurisy for a year. Everytime, I'd move my arms I'd get a shooting pain in the chest so it was quite serious and debilitating. After using this DIY home made salt inhaler, it was gone within a week but not before experiencing a strong healing curve that made me really ill. Obviously, I was very pleased to have gotten over it but also, very surprised that something as seemingly innocuous as breathing air through salt would have such a powerful affect.
I did read on the "Cisca Salt Pipe" instructions that - Initial studies have supposedly found that they can reduce length of flu down to a day from a few days. I have found this to be correct and so have friends and family. They can also minimise the affects of pollen or hayfever symptoms. My Mother reported a 95% reduction in Hayfever symptoms. All in all, they are powerful immune system boosters.
Mode of Action:
Having never seen or read a theory of how they work. I thought I'd share mine.
Breathing air through course salt alkalises it and this stream of negatively charged ions enters the lungs and has a immediately soothing affect. If you consider that all inflammation is acidity, or positive charge, when a volume of alkaline air enters the lungs, there is a charge transference away from the inflammation to the alkaline air which is then expelled. 2-3 inhales will calm a cough. You might expect a similar affect just by being near the sea air but the salt inhalers action appears to be much deeper, faster and more effective.
By relaxing the lungs, you also aid by an immediate knock on affect, the function of the liver and large intestine/colon as these 2 meridians, in Chinese Medicine, precede and follow the lung meridian. Lung issues can therefore be caused by an overburdened liver or congested colon (cheese etc). Folk whose liver's are congested by longterm medication will have lung issues. As you can see from the meridian clock, the liver precedes the lungs and is followed by the colon.

During the night, waking at the change over times can indicate an issue with the meridians in question. Of course, the time of the meridian change over is also dependant on daylight savings and the specific longitude you live at near to your national time. For instance, in Glastonbury UK, the colon's time in the summer is 5.30am -7.30am and 4.30am - 6.30am in winter. By relaxing and clearing the lungs, energy flows more freely from the liver meridian, through the lung meridian and into the large intestine meridian. Hence, having a bowel movement is therefore common after first using salt inhalers. It is my reasoning that flu and the common cold is more often than not, a congested colon and is why it can be treated rapidly using a salt inhaler.
Below, is a diagram of the colon meridian that begins on the index finger and teminates at the base of the nose.

If you consider that the large intestine meridian terminates either side of your nose, any blocks felt in the nose can therefore indicate a congested colon/large intestine. This can often be cleared using the inhaler to relax the lungs. I have also seen "blocked noses" disappear immediately following acupuncture on LI4 (large intesting acupoint) on the hand. I used to remove blocked noses immediately for family using one of the Electro-acupuncture devices you can purchase on eBay on LI4.
Some asthma sufferers have reported less or no need for an inhaler after a month's use of salt inhalers. The affect can be immediately calming for a cough or other lung issues. In my experience, for the price and simplicity of them, they're second to none as a health promoting tool. Everyone should own one in my opinion. Some folk like to use Pink Himalayan Salt or Rock Salt though I have found they all work powerfully.
How to make your own salt inhaler for next to no cost:
Currently, I tend to use Tidmans coarse rock salt. I take a small used plastic drinking bottle, clean it out and dry the inside using tissue though you can let it dry out with the lid off. It's best to buy the drinking bottles with small pop tops, as per the picture, as these can be closed. It is necessary to sieve the coarse rock salt for a few minutes, shaking the the smaller grains out. You then need to pierce 10-20 small holes around the base of the bottle no higher than a centimetre from the base. I use a sharp pointed drawing compass or something similar. Obviously, the holes need to be smaller than than grains of coarse sea salt so that they do not fall out! Do ten holes and see if that's easy enough to inhale through and do more if necessary. If the bottle dents then pop it back out using a screwdriver or similar. Now, you can pour the salt in to the bottle by first pouring it from the sieve onto folded paper. Fill the bottle about half to two thirds full. That should do it and now your powerful health device is ready to go. You can, of course, purchase one off eBay or similar online outlets. Supposedly, even pharmacies often sell them nowadays.
I hope you found this blog of interest and that you now know that you have in your hands something that can deal with many health issues. Simply by improving the function of your liver, lung and colon meridians you will make great improvements on many health conditions whether acute or chronic.
